Skiing The Pipeline

A gas transmission pipeline runs through the backcountry. The designers must have loved skiing because they ran it right up and over the highest peak around allowing for a good deal of fun when the conditions are right. To access it one rides a ski lift - treks through a forest - then climbs a few hundred feet to the top before skiing down 2ooo vertical feet in about a mile and a half.

Things get a bit more interesting.

A serious decent.

The run out at the bottom requires a bit of dodging around briers.

Why We Call It Frostline

This image was taken of the section of Cabin Mountain on which we live. Our house is in the open area to the left of center and right along the frostline. Frost frequently coats the ridge above our home, but rarely below.

Inaugural Post

This blog will be used as a repository of shared images for those interested in viewing what life is like in and around Canaan Valley, West Virginia.

Earlier today Tucker and I took an early morning walk out onto the Canaan Valley National Wildlife Refuge. A recent thaw has melted much of the 6 feet of snow we've received so far this season, but the current sub-freezing temperatures offered a some interesting photographic opportunities.
